5 Things To Know About ICE/CBP’s Mass Deportation
Federal law enforcement and local resources are being sapped to terrorize communities where ICE and CBP are engaged in brazen racial profiling, indiscriminate targeting of people who pose no danger, and an intentional radical escalation of cruelty that American history will look back on with shame.
1. This is not about the law. DHS is routinely breaking the law by deporting people who entered lawfully, have lawful status, or who are going through the court process. The agency is also illegally detaining thousands despite hundreds of judges ruling against them.
2. This is not about public safety. 93% of detained immigrants have no violent record. Detention of people with no criminal record have “surged by 2,450%.” Systematically and intentionally targeting young children and ripping them from their families does not make anyone safer.
3. Mass deportation makes all of us less safe. Hundreds, if not thousands, of citizens have been detained, arrested, pepper sprayed while being held unarmed on the ground. Priests shot with pepper balls. Pregnant women dragged. Babies and local cops teargassed. A nurse and a mother murdered in broad daylight.
4. Deporting toddlers with cancer is being given a higher priority than solving violent crimes. The Administration has diverted over 25,000 law enforcement officers away from their jobs to instead work only on mass deportation, and local governments have shifted almost 10,000 officers. Nearly 1 in 2 FBI agents at major field offices now only work on mass deportation.
5. Mass deportation will bankrupt generations. DHS’ budget has ballooned to over $170 billion dollars, enough to be the 13th largest military in the world. They’re spending hundreds of millions on TV ads, posh private jets, billions detaining nonviolent, hardworking immigrants, with a budget bigger than all other federal law enforcement combined.
The cruelty we are seeing will be remembered for generations.
